Investment Approach—Process

Step Five—Monitor the Investment Process

The same level of research and analysis that goes into selecting initial asset allocations and managers continues on an ongoing basis. Monitoring of the investment program is performed by both Merchants Trust and our independent research partner, Litman/Gregory. Adjustments to the portfolios are made in response to changing market opportunities or the needs of the client.

There are multiple levels of oversight involved with our investment program:

  • Client Service Team—A team of professionals assigned to your account relationship are responsible for making sure your portfolio is appropriate for your situation.
  • Trust Investment Officer—Our internal professional responsible for the review and monitoring of the investment program. Serves as chair of the Trust Investment Committee and intermediary for communications with our research partners.
  • Trust Investment Committee—An internal committee responsible for the review and monitoring of all aspects of the Merchants Trust Company investment program.
  • Independent Research Partner—Litman/Gregory Asset Management, LLC, is an independent investment research and advisory firm, hired by Merchants Trust Company to provide research and recommendations related to asset allocation and investment manager selection.
  • Board of Trustees—The Merchants Trust Company Board of Trustees is responsible for supervising the operations of Merchants Trust to insure proper exercise of the fiduciary powers of the company. Board membership currently includes seven external and two internal members.
  • FDIC and State of Vermont—Regulatory authorities conduct annual on-site examinations of Merchants Trust Company operations, including review of the investment process.
